Samsung recently announced that it is fully competing for the 2-nanometer foundry order for the next generation of NVIDIA GPUs. It wants to fight against NTD in the high-level chip market, hoping to reverse the outside world's impression of its poor yield on advanced processes.
According to Korean media reports, Samsung's vice president of semiconductor industry (DS department) Quan Yonghui recently flew to the United States. In addition to negotiating with NVIDIA to supply 12-layer stacked HBM3E high-frequency wide memory, it also highly competed for the GPU orders that NVIDIA plans to produce at the end of the year, hoping to attract this heavy-level customer.
In fact, Samsung is also undergoing strategic adjustments. The 1.4-nanometer process progress that was originally clamoring is now slow. Is it because there is technical problem that cannot be broken? Therefore, we are dedicated to promoting the 2nm GAA process. Samsung said that the yield rate of this period has improved significantly recently and is expected to start mass production as soon as possible at the end of this year.
But the other head of Intel adopted a completely different strategy. They no longer actively promote the 18A stage, but instead decided to concentrate their firepower on the 14A process, hoping to win the Qing Yan of major customers such as Apple and NVIDIA through such a "trail supercar", try to quickly follow the pictures and even catch up with the TAX.
With telco and Intel, it may not be easy for Samsung to seize NVIDIA's orders. Currently, Samsung's 2-nanometer yield is only about 40%. In contrast, external telco has reached a high level of 90%, and even Intel's 18A process has a 50% performance. In this case, NVIDIA probably won't easily hand over key orders to Samsung for production.
The current problem is that by relying on this strategy adjustment, can Samsung truly reverse the situation and get a share of the cool chip process competition here?
