report pointed out that Changxin Storage began to produce its DDR5 memory at the end of 2024, and the situation has also caused concern in the industry, worried that the Chinese DRAM manufacturer plans to use the cheap DDR5 memory to sell the market. Later, it was reported that Changxin stored and used process technology to manufacture its 16 GB DDR5 equipment. Therefore, its chip size is 40% larger than the 16 GB DDR5 chip produced by Samsung. This also means that compared with Samsung's DDR5 memory, Changxin's DDR5 memory production costs are much higher, which makes it difficult and unprofitable to sell this product in the market.
In addition, the cost is not the only problem that Changxin saves DDR5 memory. In fact, in early 2025, in the early test of the DDR5 memory sample collected by Changxin Cash, it was discovered that it had stability problems at common packaging temperatures of around 60°C, and the same problems also existed at temperatures below zero. These problems have caused modules that use Changxin Cash DDR5 memory to fail to meet the reliability standards. Therefore, Changxin Cunyuan had to modify its DDR5 memory design, and even further solved the problem with a new light shield that cost no expense.
Therefore, Changxin Cash delayed the production time of the DDR5 memory this time. The market has previously predicted that the initial production time will begin around May or June 2025. However, as of July, there was no mass production situation. It was later confirmed that despite the progress of heat dissipation technology, the production line yield of Changxin Cash was still relatively low, hovering around 50%, which is unacceptable for commodity DRAM. Therefore, Changxin storage needs to be further improved and accumulated operation experience in order to achieve the yield of average competition with the industry, which further extends the production time.
In addition, the recent market test display of Changxin Cunyuan's DDR5 module has significantly improved its quality and performance, and is currently close to the level of Taiwanese manufacturer Nanya Technology. If these products are verified by leading PC manufacturers or module products, it indicates that Changxin Cunchuang is narrowing the gap with established DRAM suppliers. However, due to yield issues, these products have not yet achieved the goal of manufacturing, which makes it difficult for Changxin Cash to be regarded as an important participant in the DDR5 market.
And although Changxin Cunchuang has improved the quality of its DDR5 memory and is expected to improve production yields, the company is still facing major challenges. Because according to TechInsights data, Changxin Cunyuan's G4 manufacturing technology has a characteristic size of about 16 nanometers, which is corresponding to the third-generation 10-nanometer stage that Samsung launched in early 2021. Under this situation, Changxin Cash's 16 GB DDR5 production cost is higher than that of other companies' similar chips, and it is difficult to compete in the market.
